“You are going to do what?”
Yep… you heard me right. My husband and I, along with our dog Franklin, are going to live out of our 4Runner on a 8 day 900 + mile off road tour through Eastern Kentucky.
Yes, we are probably going to smell bad. Yes, we will probably see bugs and snakes and spiders and all the things most people consider to generally be terrible. Yes, I am sure we will argue and be frustrated with each other, because who wouldn’t when you are trapped in a car together for eight days?
My co-workers and friends definitely think I am crazy. They think my husband is outdoorsy, but me….I am just crazy for going along with it all. They want to know where the 5 star resorts are! Why would you do anything other than go lay on a beach and drink a little umbrella drink in the sun? Honestly that sounds awesome, but you know what I am going to remember more? ADVENTURE!
We definitely had an adventure. We learned a ton about who we are and what we want out of life. We felt the frustration of being exhausted and hungry and still looking for a campsite. We experienced the wonder of standing together on top of a mountain with a 360 degree view of mountains around you, without another soul in sight.
I learned a lot about my husband, including what a talented adventurer he is. That man has mad skills. He drove, navigated, photographed, and generally kept us alive. Not to mention the hours upon endless hours he spent relentlessly researching and preparing us. My love and respect for him grew even more those eight days. I watched him push his boundaries and grow. I watched us grow together in the knowledge and empowerment that comes when we accomplished this journey.
You know, those 5 star resorts, they aren’t sounding so fabulous anymore. I fell asleep in a resort with a million star view. I woke up in my own treehouse, with the birds singing around me. I traded the swimming pool for the cool mountain stream. Instead of dinner in a fancy restaurant, I ate off a plastic plate in my lap around a crackling campfire with my husband.
Yes we smelled bad, saw a snake, and got frustrated with each other. Honestly, I loved every minute of it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
You can have your five star resort, I will take my million star resort.
